First Place - Meritage over $20 - Royal Agricultural Winter Fair 2009
In the Vineyard:
Varietal: 100% Estate Grown, T3 Organic/Demeter
Appellation: VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake
Harvested: Southbrook Estate Vineyard, Sept 24-Oct 4, 2007
Brix at harvest: Cabernet Sauvignon, 22.6, Cabernet Franc, 23.9 and Merlot, 23.3 Brix, respectively
In the Winery:
Grapes were hand harvested from our estate vineyard and carefully hand sorted. Fermentation occurred in oak vats with delestage cap management techniques employed 3 times/day for the duration of the fermentation. The wine was then barrel aged in 75% new oak, 73% of which was French and 17% American. The wine was aged in barriques for 20 months and blend profiles were decided over several months. The blend consists of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc and 23% Merlot. The wine received a gentle egg white fining and was bottled unfiltered.
Alcohol: 12.7%
Titratable Acidity: 6.4g/L
Bottled: Aug 7, 2009
Closure: Natural cork
Cases Produced: 1,044
In the Glass: Rich, dark, classic claret colour. Inviting nose of dark fruits and complex vanilla and coffee, toasty notes. Round mid-palate and long satisfying finish. Structure suggested a wine to enjoy young with grilled red meats or to cellar for 10-15 years.
Release: November 21, 2009

This displays a lovely, complex and well interwoven nose of cassis, cream, herbs, vanilla and spice with echoes of leather and dried beef jerky. It’s medium-full bodied, taut and a bit sinewy, with dry tannin, with a streak of minerality on the finish. Focused, firm and dry. This has real presence and excellent length. Should be awesome with roast leg of lamb. Age it two to five years.
