Pelee Island is the largest of the Lake Erie Islands and is nestled in the centre of the lake.
One of only three “Designated Viticultural Areas” in Ontario, Pelee Island is home to over 700 acres of vitis vinifera vineyards. Here, in an internationally recognized microclimate created by its extreme southerly latitude and the moderating effect of Lake Erie, the vines of Pelee Island Winery enjoy Canada’s longest growing season, and thrive in the island’s rich limestone-based soils. The combination of sun, soil, lake and latitude create ideal grape-growing conditions, and provide the source of Pelee Island Winery’s Award-Winning Wines.

History is predominant when one speaks of Pelee Island Winery and the vineyards on the island. The tradition of winning awards for its wines, on both a national and international level, continues since receiving a medal in 1878 in Paris. The first estate winery in Canada, Vin Villa was founded in the 1860’s and can still be seen on the island today. Since the early 1980’s, Pelee Island Winery has planted the European Vitis vinifera varieties such as Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Merlot etc. These new plantings have ushered in a new era of success for the winery.
Since 1982, the production facilities have been located on the mainland in Kingsville, only 30 minutes from the Ambassador Bridge between Windsor and Detroit, USA. Visitors are invited to visit our extensive retail store and take a comprehensive tour of the winemaking establishment.
