Niagara College Teaching Winery, Culinary Institute and Wine Visitor +
Education Centre
Located in the heart of Canada's largest wine region, nestled at the foot of
the Niagara Escarpment Niagara College welcomes you to an unforgettable and
enlightening wine country and culinary experience. Explore the campus
gardens and shop at the greenhouse, dine at the Niagara Culinary Institute
and enrich your mind at the new state-of-the-art Wine Visitor + Education
Centre, while sampling award-winning VQA wines produced at Canada's only
teaching winery.
In 2000, Niagara College established the Winery and Viticulture Technician
Program, the first of its kind in Canada. This hands-on-course was developed
in direct consultation with the wine industry. Students study everything
from viticulture to wine-making and sales and marketing. When the students
graduate they are prepared for careers in the wine industry. In 2004 the
program received the Pinnacle award for best supplier of graduates to the
tourism industry. The program was also awarded Best Program in Canada 2003
by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges.
Students produce wines in conjunction with renowned Winemaker and Professor
of Applied Oenology, Terence Van Rooyen. The wines may be purchased through
the Campus Wine Store, www.winerytohome.com and are available in many fine
restaurants. The wines produced have won over 90 awards, nationally and
internationally, since the first vintage release in 2001. Niagara College
Teaching Winery strives to constantly be innovative and current and all
proceeds of sales support student learning.
